Baroness Orczy
Baroness Orczy at age 13 |
Baroness Emma Magdalena Rosalia Maria Josefa Barbara Orczy was born in 1865 in Hungary, only child of Felix Orczy and Baroness Emma Orczy. Her childhood was spent in Hungary where her family was associated with the court of the last great Hapsburg emperor, Karl von Hapsburg, and in France. When she was fifteen, her family moved to England. There, she took up painting, but did not prove successful. She then began writing and published 68 volumes during her lifetime. She is best remembered for The Scarlet Pimpernel which combined her love of history, adventure, romance, and humour. |
